We often have so many crazy thoughts swirling around our heads about what we should eat, what’s healthiest, what to stay away from and what not to eat then it can be hard to actually decide what to eat!
So I thought I’d d0 a behind the scenes video and walk you through the process of how I decide what to eat.
This was inspired by me standing in front of the refrigerator for a good 10 minutes trying to decide what to eat. (I was hoping something already cooked would magically appear in front of my eyes 🙂 )
It can be confusing to have a swirl of rules, “shoulds”, and supposed-to’s in your head while also trying to listen to your body and eat “normally”.
Hearing someone else’s process can often help you in your own! Which is why I wanted to make this video 🙂
Remember that there is no right or wrong way to decide. You will always get feedback from whether or not you “listened” to your body, so be open to hearing it!
Here’s a look at my own process of figuring out what to eat. I hope it helps you in your own decision process!

Your Turn…

Your plan will not help someone who is over 30 lbs overweight. The amount of craving in that spot is FAR BEYOND the cravings you mention. There comes a time when one does not want to STOP. This is due to unresolved problems in one’s life.
More helpful would be to stress BEING READY at all times–having a fridge filled with many protein items…let that be a first choice…eat some immediately on sight before grabbing just anything, just to get rid of the initial crazy hunger. Have water boiling to make a hot tea or coffee and drink that right after the protein. This extends the time for the protein to do its work. Also stress that to avoid real hunger, have in your purse a small baggie of nuts and seeds, an apple and sugar free gum or candies which can way lay these bigger cravings whenever you really must have something to take the edge off. Beautify the feeling of the edge.
All the real health gurus advocate far less refined carbs such as refined box cereals (other than ancient grains or oatmeal). Someone truly on a diet needs to cut back on all refjned items and BE PREPARED with trays of fresh veggies cut and ready in the fridge and the proteins there at all times as I mentioned before. Planning for a sweet treat twice a week is important but it should not be sitting in your home in large quantities. Having the treat time away from home is best and shared with another to avoid eating more than 6 bites.
Often those who have never been more than 20 lb overweight really underestimate the pangs felt by the obese and the number of strategies needed.
Hi Jenn. Thanks for the videos, blog posts, and everything you do to make us all a bit more sane in this crazy world. You always say something that clicks with me and I do a little happy dance when I see you in my inbox.
Thanks for this lovely comment, Janet! You made my day 🙂 I’m so glad you find them helpful. I loved making this video!
Hi Marge! Thanks for weighing in with your thoughts. This video is really meant to just give one way to approach choosing what to eat. It definitely doesn’t address the in depth cravings of emotional eating (if you search in the blog, there are lots of other more detailed trainings and posts on that!). And I agree…being prepared is important; I always have some sort of snack or protein bar in my purse 🙂 The strategies that I use are for anyone, regardless of weight (and they may not resonate with everyone, which is totally fine. I always say take what resonates and leave the rest!). I’ve been 60 pounds heavier than I am now and still utilized the same tools to work through cravings, deal with eating when bored/overwhelmed/stressed, and let go of dieting. Above all else, I advocate and teach women to learn to listen to THEIR own wisdom. My posts, podcasts and trainings are designed to point each person to that place (and give some tips that will hopefully help along the way in learning how to listen to that!) 🙂
